Study A Levels online — how it works

Our online A Level courses follow the same specifications as schools and colleges, from Ofqual-regulated awarding bodies (AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, depending on the subject). You study the course material online or with a printed study pack, complete marked assignments, and then sit the official exams as a private candidate. The A Level you receive is the same qualification, with the same grades and UCAS points, as one taken in a sixth form.

1. Enrol and start straight away. There are no term dates, so you can begin whenever suits you.
2. Work through the course at your own pace. You have 2 years to complete your assignments, and many learners finish sooner.
3. Submit your assignments. Every assignment is marked, with written feedback. You can submit as many times as you need.
4. Book your exams. You sit the written exams at an exam centre near you, booked through our exam partner Tutors & Exams. We can help you arrange it.
5. Get your results. Results come from the awarding body and are the same certificate any A Level student receives.

A Levels for adults

Most of our A Level learners are adults. Some are returning to education, some need a specific subject for a university course, and some are improving a grade they got at school. There are no entry requirements and no age limit. Because there are no classes to attend, you can fit study around work and family life.

A Levels can support an application to university. Each grade carries UCAS tariff points: A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, E = 16. If you're applying for a particular course, check its entry requirements with the university first.

Retaking an A Level? You can study one of our courses and resit the exam as a private candidate, whether you want a higher grade or need to pass a subject you didn't complete.

Exams: what you need to know

• When: A Level exams take place once a year, in May and June.
• Where: you sit your exams at an approved exam centre as a private candidate. Many schools, colleges and specialist centres accept private candidates, and our exam-centre finder on each course page lists those near you.
• Booking: exams are booked through our exam partner, Tutors & Exams, and we can help you arrange it. Places for private candidates are limited, so book early: entries for the summer exams usually close in late March or early April.
• Exam fees: these are paid directly to the exam centre and are not included in the course price. Fees vary by centre and subject. We'll contribute £45 for each course towards them: when you've completed your course and booked your exam, send us proof of the booking at least 30 days before the exam and we'll reimburse you.
• Coursework subjects: English Language, English Literature, History and Geography include a non-exam assessment (coursework or fieldwork) worth about 20% of the marks. Not every exam centre accepts coursework from private candidates, so we'll point you to centres that do and can help you book and arrange it.

Science practicals

Biology, Chemistry and Physics include a practical endorsement. It is reported separately from your grade and is not needed to pass the A Level. Some university science courses ask for it, though, so check your university's requirements. The practicals are completed over four days at a partner lab in Bolton, Coventry, London (SE19), Sutton or Taunton, booked through our exam partner Tutors & Exams for a separate fee.

• Pay in full, or spread the cost: £49.50 deposit, then from £37.13 a month (0% finance; UK billing address and bank account needed; bill payer 18+).

Frequently asked questions

Are online A Levels the same as A Levels taken at school?

Yes. You follow the same exam-board specification and sit the same exams. Your certificate comes from the awarding body and does not say that you studied online.

Can adults take A Levels?

Yes. There is no age limit and no entry requirement. Many of our learners are adults studying around work.

How long does an online A Level take?

You have up to 2 years to complete the course. Exams run each May–June, so plan your study towards a summer exam series.

Are exam fees included?

No. Exam fees are paid directly to the exam centre where you sit your exams, and they vary by centre. We contribute £45 for each course towards them once you've completed the course and sent us proof of your exam booking, at least 30 days before the exam.

Can I take more than one A Level?

Yes. You can study several subjects at the same time; each is enrolled separately.

Can I resit an A Level online?

Yes. You can study the course again and sit the exam as a private candidate at an exam centre.

Do universities accept A Levels studied online?

Yes. They are the same A Level qualification with the same UCAS tariff points. Check the specific entry requirements for your course, including whether science courses ask for the practical endorsement.
