Assessment
In order to achieve a full GCSE Foundation French qualification, you need to sit 4 exams. You will need to book a place at an official exam centre. There is a separate fee to book your exams, which will be paid directly to the facility at the time of booking.
We’ll help you to book your exams when you feel ready! Exams take place in May and June.
Paper 1: Listening
- 35 minutes written exam 40 marks
- 25% of overall GCSE French marks
- Questions include comprehension and transcribing short sentences
Paper 2: Speaking

- 7–9 minutes + 15 minutes supervised preparation
- 50 marks

Paper 3: Reading
- 45 minutes written exam

- Questions include reading comprehension and translation (French to English)
Paper 4: Writing
- 1 hour 10 minutes written exam
- 50 marks
- 25% of overall GCSE French marks
- Questions include responses to visual stimuli and translation (English to French)
