Course Units

Unit 1: Child and Young Person Development (H/601/3305; Unit Level 2; GLH; 15 hours; Credits 2) – the main stages of child and young person development; the influences affecting children and young person’s development, and the effect of transitions on children and young people’s development.

Unit 2: Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People (K/601/3323; Unit Level 2; GLH; 20 hours; Credits: 3) – legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people; knowing what to do when children are ill or injured, and knowing how to respond to evidence or concerns of abuse, harm or bullying.

Unit 3: Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults (F/601/3313, Unit Level 2; GLH; 15 hours; Credits: 2) – interacting with children and young people; interacting with adults; knowing how to communicate professionally and respectfully with children, young people and adults, and legislation and procedures related to confidentiality and data protection.

Unit 4: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People (D/601/3321; Unit Level 2; GLH; 15 hours; Credits: 2) – the importance of promoting equality and diversity in work with children and young people; understanding the impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people, and understanding inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people.

Unit 5: Schools as Organisations (A/601/3326; Unit Level 3; GLH; 15 hours; Credits: 3) – different types of schools in the education sector; how schools are organised in terms of roles and responsibilities; understanding how schools uphold their aims and values; laws and codes of practice affecting work in schools; range and purpose of school policies and procedures, and wider context in which schools operate.

Assessment

To complete this course you will need to submit a series of written assignments to your personal tutor for marking. Each of these assignments is designed to test your knowledge of the course materials taught on the syllabus, and will ask you to demonstrate your newly acquired skills within realistic scenarios.

No examination is required, enabling you to work at a pace that it right for you – all from the comfort of your own home.

Required Knowledge

No required knowledge or experience is needed to enrol onto this distance learning course. Nor do you have to be already working within a school setting to apply. All we ask is that you are a minimum of 16 years old.

Students may also find it beneficial to have basic IT skills and a fluency in English Language to help boost their engagement and comprehension of the course materials.
