This course will:

Section 1: The Living Environment – conditions for life on Earth; conservation of biodiversity; life processes in the biosphere and conservation planning, and opportunities for skills development and independent thinking.
Section 2: The Physical Environment – the hydrosphere; mineral resources, and biogeochemical cycles.
Section 3: Energy Resources – the importance of energy supplies in the development of society; the impact of the features of energy resources; the sustainability of current energy resource exploitation; strategies to secure future energy supplies, and new energy conservation techniques.
Section 4: Pollution – the properties of pollutants; strategies to control pollutants; ionising radiation; noise; solid wastes; heavy metals; acid mine drainage; nutrient pollution, and pesticides.
Section 5: Biological Resources – agriculture; agroecosystems; sustainability of agriculture; aquatic food production systems, and forest resources.
Section 6: Sustainability – dynamic equilibria; energy; material cycles, and the circular economy.
Section 7: Research Methods – scientific methodologies; sampling techniques; specialist techniques; fieldwork and laboratory activities, and standard environmental techniques.
To achieve this full qualification, you will be assessed across all 7 sections. Within these written examinations you will be expected to demonstrate your understanding and comprehension of the materials taught on the syllabus, and be able to apply your knowledge into essay style questions.
Paper 1: this 3 hour written examination carries 50% of the weight of your course and will assess your knowledge of the content taught in sections 2, 3, 4 and 7 (through the use of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions).
Paper 2: this 3 hour written examination carries 50% of your A Level grade and will assess your knowledge of the content taught on sections 1, 5, 6 and 7. This will be achieved through a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.
There is also an element of fieldwork lasting 4 consecutive days. However, you can choose to reduce this by completing a mixture of 2 days fieldwork and 12 laboratory based activities. This needs to be completed at the Lincoln centre.
Please Note: these practical skills will be assessed during your examinations and will make up to 15% of your mark.
You will need to take the standard A Level examinations in order to gain the full A Level.
These examinations run on certain dates (information available from the AQA website), where you’ll need to register onto them independent of the course. There will also be additional costs for these examinations separate from the course fee.
No required skills or knowledge are needed to enrol onto this course; however it is recommended that you have skills/knowledge associated with GCSE Combined Science or its equivalent.
Upon successful completion of this home based learning course you will receive a full A Level in Environmental Studies issued by AQA.
